The Sedgwick County Zoo is the seventh-largest zoo in the entire United States. Ranked as the top outdoor family attraction in Kansas, the 250-acre zoo houses 3,000 animals of nearly 400 species. Orangutans, gorillas, tigers, penguins, giraffes and chimpanzees are just a few of the animals on display. There are several different exhibits to explore, including the Koch Orangutan & Chimpanzee Habitat, Cessna Penguin Cove, The Elephants of the Zambezi River Valley and the Giraffe Feeding Station. The Sedgwick County Zoo is open from 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. from March-October and from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. November-February.

  1. Wichita Art Museum

things to do in wichita ksThe Wichita Art Museum is the largest art museum in Kansas. Established in 1915 and opened in 1935, the museum has a permanent collection of over 8,000 objects. Some of the featured artists include Mary Cassatt, Arthur G. Dove, Robert Henri, John Marin, Edward Hopper and Thomas Eakins. The museum, which expanded to 115,000 square feet in 2003, also has a ceiling and chandelier created by Dale Chihuly in the main lobby. The Wichita Art Museum is open Tuesday-Sunday from 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

  1. Sedgwick Park

Located just outside of downtown Wichita, Sedgwick Park offers outdoor fun for the entire family. The public green space features four inland lakes for boating, paddle boarding, kayaking and fishing. Walkers, runners and bikers can also take advantage of a series of paved and dirt trails. Visitors can also play softball, volleyball, basketball bocce ball, horseshoes and tennis. Barbeque grills are available to rent for $40.00. Both open and enclosed shelters are also available.

Located near the east bank of the Arkansas River in downtown Wichita, the center is the largest facility for consumer shows, entertainment and meetings in the city. The site is perhaps best known for hosting the Miss USA Pageant from 1990-93 and the Miss Teen USA Pageant in 1995. The center is also the home for the Wichita Grand Opera, Wichita Symphony Orchestra, Music Theatre Wichita and Music Theatre for Young People.

If all the shows and sight-seeing are making you hungry, the Doo-Dah Diner is a must-visit. The classic, old-school diner features breakfast and lunch made from scratch.
