PRISCILLA LONG
PACIFIC NORTHWEST NATURE POEM
Beside the blue lake, wires
criss-cross the sun-burst sky
and traffic stirs the wind.
The petal-mottled sidewalk
winks jewels of bright foil,
gumwrap, cigarette pack.
Beside the blue lake
cherry trees gather butts,
parking lots, and Pepsi cups.
Blackberries tangle with tires.
And chickweed, shepherd's-purse,
purslane, plantain grow
green in used car grease.
Cottonwoods drop condoms
beside the blue lake.
Bindweed lets down its vine hair
into broken brown glass, yes bitter
dock cracks the asphalt.
