Ferry vs flight, Acropolis timing, caldera hotels, and what to skip when you only have five days.
Greece in Five Days: Athens and Santorini
Five days is tight for “all of Greece,” but Athens plus one island is a classic first trip if you accept one domestic transfer. This article explains how to split your week, when to fly vs ferry, and what to skip so the route feels realistic—not a rushed checklist of every island on a map.
The realistic five-day split
Most travelers searching “5 day greece itinerary” want either Athens + one island or Athens only with day trips. The full five-island sampler (Athens, Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Rhodes) only works with multiple flights and is better treated as inspiration than a literal week.
Recommended split:
- Athens (2 days): Acropolis at opening, Acropolis Museum, Plaka, one museum afternoon, Cape Sounion or a nearby-island day trip.
- Santorini (3 days): Fira base, Oia sunset (arrive early), caldera hike Fira–Oia, one beach or Akrotiri afternoon.
See our 5-day Greece itinerary for structured daily cards. If you only have five days total, follow the Athens + Santorini path—not every day card on the page in one week.
Day 1–2 in Athens
Morning at the Acropolis: Book a timed entry for 8:00–8:30 a.m. in summer. The Parthenon heat and crowds peak after 10 a.m. Wear grippy shoes; marble is slick.
Acropolis Museum: Visit after the site (same morning) so context clicks. Café on the terrace overlooks the ruins.
Plaka and Monastiraki: Afternoon wander for dinner. Taverna tables fill after 8 p.m.; reservations help on weekends.
Optional day 2: National Archaeological Museum if you want more antiquities, or Cape Sounion for a sunset temple view. Hydra or Aegina day ferries work if you skip Santorini.
Santorini: days 3–5
Where to stay: Fira for buses and restaurants; Imerovigli for quieter caldera views; Oia for sunsets (premium prices, crowded lanes). First-timers often split: Fira base + one Oia evening.
Fira to Oia hike: Allow 3–4 hours with photos. Start early; summer midday is brutal on the path.
Akrotiri: Prehistoric site (“Prehistoric Pompeii”) pairs well with Red Beach nearby—go early for parking.
Wine: Santo Wines or smaller estates in Pyrgos. Book tastings in shoulder season.
Ferry vs flight
Summer ferries from Piraeus to Santorini take roughly 5–8 hours (fast ferries faster, pricier). Flights are 45 minutes plus airport time—often better if you only have five days total.
Book ferries on Blue Star or Seajets sites; July–August needs advance purchase. If your ferry is cancelled (weather), flights from Athens to Santorini are the backup.
Budget and cash
Greece is mid-range for Europe. Budget €110–180 per person daily; Santorini spikes in peak season for hotels and cliff-view restaurants.
Cash helps on smaller islands; ATMs exist in Fira. Cards widely accepted in Athens.
Heat and crowds
June–August: start sights at 8 a.m. Shoulder seasons (April–May, October) improve prices and temperatures.
Easter and August 15 see domestic travel spikes—book ferries and hotels early.
What to skip in five days
- Mykonos party nights unless you drop a full Athens day
- Crete or Rhodes without a flight and at least three nights each
- Driving the mainland beyond Athens unless you extend to seven days
Language and etiquette
English works at major sites. Basic Greek greetings help in smaller tavernas. Dress modestly at monasteries and some village churches.
