Europe Carry-On Packing: A One-Bag List

Packing light is the difference between a trip that feels effortless and one spent dragging a suitcase over cobblestones. On Europe's budget airlines, it also saves real money in baggage fees. This guide is a practical one-bag system you can adapt to any season.

Why one bag

A single carry-on means no check-in queue, no lost-luggage risk, no baggage fee, and the freedom to take stairs, trains, and small streets without a struggle. Once you travel this way, it is hard to go back.

The bag

A soft-sided carry-on in the 40–45 litre range is the sweet spot: big enough for a week of clothes, small enough to fit most cabin limits. Check your airline's maximum dimensions, because budget carriers are stricter than legacy ones.

The clothing list

Think in layers and repeat outfits, not in days:

• 4–5 tops (mix of short and long sleeve)
• 1–2 mid layers (fleece or light sweater)
• 1 waterproof shell
• 2 pairs of trousers or a couple of skirts/dresses
• 1 pair of comfortable walking shoes (worn, not packed)
• 1 pair of lighter shoes or sandals
• Underwear and socks for about five days
• A warm hat, gloves, and a scarf in winter; a sun hat in summer

Toiletries and the liquids rule

Airport security limits liquids to containers of 100 ml (about 3.4 oz) or less, carried in a single clear bag. Decant what you need into small bottles, or buy basics on arrival. Solid toiletries—bar soap, shampoo bars, solid deodorant—do not count as liquids and are a light packer's friend.

Tech and documents

• Phone, charger, and a power bank
• A universal adapter (or the right plug for your destinations)
• Passport, cards, and a printed backup of key bookings
• A small padlock for hostel lockers

Keep a photo of your passport and insurance details somewhere you can access offline.

The laundry strategy

Plan to wash rather than pack a full two weeks. A sink wash with travel detergent, or a laundrette once a trip, lets five days of clothes cover a month. Quick-dry fabrics make this painless.

Airline size differences

Budget airlines such as Ryanair and some others have smaller free cabin allowances and charge for a larger cabin bag, so measure your bag and book the allowance you need. Legacy carriers are more generous. The mistake to avoid is assuming your bag fits every airline on your itinerary.
