Making the Most of a Long Layover
A long connection is either dead time or a bonus mini-trip, depending on whether you plan it. This guide explains how to decide if leaving the airport is worth it, how to do the time maths safely, and how to avoid the classic mistake of missing the onward flight.
Is it worth leaving the airport?
The honest answer depends on the length of your layover and how far the city is from the terminal. As a rough guide:
- Under 4 hours: stay in the airport. By the time you clear immigration and security again, you have almost no time in the city.
- 4–6 hours: possible only if the airport is close to the centre and you have nothing to check. Treat it as a quick look, not a proper visit.
- 7–10 hours: a realistic short city visit if transport is fast—good for a meal, a landmark, or a walk.
- Overnight or 12+ hours: a genuine mini-trip; consider a hotel near the airport or a late-night city walk.
The time maths
Work backwards from your boarding time and subtract:
- Time to clear immigration and leave the airport (can be 30–90 minutes at big hubs).
- Return travel to the airport (allow for traffic or delays).
- The airline's recommended check-in and security time, which is longer internationally than you think.
- A buffer of at least an hour for the unexpected.
If the numbers leave you less than two hours in the city, it is usually not worth it.
Practical considerations
- Visa and entry rules: some countries require a visa even to leave the airport, and some allow airside transit only. Check before you count on going out.
- Luggage: if your bags are checked through, you are free. If not, you may need to store them or re-check them.
- Cash and data: carry a little local currency and have data or an offline map.
- Left luggage: most large airports have storage, which is worth the fee to travel light.
A simple plan
Pick one nearby, well-connected target rather than a list. A single landmark and a good local meal beat a rushed circuit. Use a fast airport train where one exists, and set an alarm for your return leg.
What to verify before you decide
- Whether you can enter the country with your passport and visa status.
- The fastest transport between airport and city, and its frequency.
- Whether your luggage is checked through to your final destination.
Plan the maths first, keep a generous buffer, and a long layover becomes a small bonus rather than a stress.
