Ferry vs flight, Acropolis timing, caldera hotels, and what to skip when you only have five days.
Greece in Five Days: Athens and Santorini
Five days is tight for “all of Greece,” but Athens plus one island is a classic first trip if you accept one domestic transfer.
Day split
Athens (2–3 days): Acropolis at opening, Acropolis Museum, Plaka stroll, maybe a sunset at Filopappou Hill instead of fighting crowds at the summit café.
Santorini (2–3 days): Fira viewpoints, Oia sunset (arrive early), one caldera hike Fira–Oia, optional wine tasting in Pyrgos.
See our 5-day Greece itinerary for structured daily ideas.
Ferry vs flight
Summer ferries from Piraeus to Santorini take roughly 5–8 hours (fast ferries faster, pricier). Flights are 45 minutes plus airport time—often better if you only have five days total.
Book ferries on Blue Star or Seajets sites; July–August needs advance purchase.
Where to stay
Athens: near Acropolis or Syntagma for walkability. Santorini: Fira for buses, Oia for sunsets (premium prices), Imerovigli for quieter caldera views.
Costs
Greece is mid-range for Europe. Budget €110–180 per person daily; Santorini spikes in peak season.
Heat and crowds
June–August: start sights at 8 a.m. Shoulder seasons (April–May, October) improve prices and temperatures.
Cash helps on smaller islands; ATMs exist in Fira.
Pair planning with our AI itinerary tool if you want different islands (Crete, Naxos) instead of Santorini.
