Sunrise at the Taj Mahal, driver safety, dress codes, and seasonal advice for a one-week introduction to India.
India Golden Triangle: Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur
The Golden Triangle is India’s most popular introduction: Mughal monuments in Delhi and Agra, pink-city palaces in Jaipur, and controlled chaos in Old Delhi markets. This guide complements our 7-day Golden Triangle itinerary with transport, safety, and seasonal advice for first-time visitors.
Route overview (7 days)
| City | Nights | Do not miss | |------|--------|-------------| | Delhi | 2–3 | Old Delhi lanes, Qutub Minar, Humayun’s Tomb optional | | Agra | 1–2 | Taj Mahal sunrise, Agra Fort, Mehtab Bagh sunset view | | Jaipur | 2–3 | Amber Fort morning, City Palace, markets |
10-day extension: Add Udaipur lakes and palaces—do not squeeze Kerala or Goa into the same week without flying and cutting the Triangle thin.
Our day-by-day cards include morning/afternoon/evening pacing and realistic drive times with traffic.
Delhi deep dive
Old Delhi: Rickshaw or walking tour of Chandni Chowk—spices, jewelry, street food. Jama Masjid dress code; remove shoes.
New Delhi: India Gate drive-by, Humayun’s Tomb (less crowded than Red Fort for some travelers), Qutub Minar complex.
Safety: Use prepaid airport taxis or app cabs (Uber/Ola). Avoid unmarked “airport shuttle” touts.
Food: Karim’s near Jama Masjid is legendary; stick to cooked food; peel fruit yourself.
Agra and the Taj Mahal
Sunrise at the Taj — worth one early morning; gates open before dawn in peak season queues.
Book tickets online on official ASI portals when available—avoid unofficial “skip the line” street sellers.
Agra Fort — afternoon after Taj works well; less rushed than same-morning stacking.
Mehtab Bagh — across the river for sunset Taj photos if time allows.
Same-day Delhi–Agra–Delhi — possible by train but exhausting; overnight in Agra improves the experience.
Jaipur
Amber Fort — morning elephant/jeep rides up the hill; book jeep if ethical concerns on elephants.
City Palace — still partly royal residence; museum wings take 2–3 hours.
Hawa Mahal — exterior photo stop; interior access limited.
Markets: Johari Bazaar for textiles and jewelry—bargain politely; know approximate prices.
Transport choices
Private car with driver — most common tourist approach for Triangle loops. Negotiate inclusions: parking, tolls, driver meals, AC.
Trains — authentic; book AC classes on IRCTC (1A/2A/3A) well ahead. Delhi–Agra Gatimaan Express is fastest.
Buses — budget option; less comfortable for long legs.
Flights — only if connecting distant regions (Jaipur–Udaipur); not needed for classic Triangle.
Health and hygiene
- Drink sealed bottled water; check seal integrity
- Eat cooked food at busy stalls; avoid raw salads unless upscale hotel
- Hand sanitizer and tissues—bathrooms vary
- Consult travel clinic for vaccines (hepatitis A, typhoid, etc.) before departure
- Delhi belly — rehydration salts help; know your insurance clinic network
Dress code
Shoulders and knees covered at mosques and temples. Remove shoes where required. Scarves help women at some sites.
Loose cotton beats synthetic in heat—Rajasthan sun is intense even in “cool” months.
Scams and safety
- Confirm auto-rickshaw fares or use apps
- Gem shop “export license” scams near tourist sites
- Fake tour guides at monuments—use official ticket counters only
- Keep valuables in hotel safes; minimal jewelry in crowded stations
- Women travelers: prefer prepaid transport at night in Delhi
Budget
Wide range: ₹4,000–8,000+ per person daily mid-range with private driver and decent hotels.
Luxury palace hotels and guided photography tours cost far more.
Budget travelers using trains and guesthouses can go lower but sacrifice time and comfort in heat.
Best season
October–March — cooler air, best for walking forts and Taj sunrise.
April–June — very hot; start sights at dawn, AC transport essential.
Monsoon (July–September) — rain affects outdoor plans; fewer tourists, lower prices.
Photography tips
Taj sunrise needs patience—security restrictions on bags and drones (drones illegal without permits).
Forts and palaces: morning light for Amber; afternoon haze common in summer.
Ask permission before photographing people in markets—some expect small payment.
Beyond the Triangle
Rajasthan extensions (Jodhpur, Jaisalmer) need extra week. Kerala backwaters are a separate trip with flight from Delhi.
Use our AI planner only if you accept cutting Triangle days—not adding Goa on a 7-day plan.
