The realistic 5-day Spain split, AVE booking tips, and what to add if you have seven days.
Five Days in Spain: Barcelona and Madrid
When travelers search “5 days in Spain,” they usually mean Barcelona and Madrid—not Seville, Granada, and the coast in the same week. This guide matches that reality: two cities, AVE train between them, and what to cut if you only have a long weekend in each.
The realistic 5-day split
- Days 1–3 Barcelona: Gothic Quarter, Sagrada Família, Park Güell, one beach afternoon or Montserrat day trip
- Travel: AVE to Madrid (about 2.5–3 hours)—book seats on Renfe early
- Days 4–5 Madrid: Prado, Reina Sofía, Retiro, tapas in La Latina
Our 5-day Spain itinerary extends to seven days with Valencia and a Toledo day trip—skip those if you only have five days.
Barcelona essentials
Sagrada Família: Timed entry mandatory; morning light through stained glass is worth an early slot.
Park Güell: Book online; neighborhood walk in Gràcia afterward.
Gothic Quarter: Evening is atmospheric; watch for tourist-trap restaurants on main squares—walk one block off Plaça Reial.
Beach: Barceloneta is convenient; locals often prefer Bogatell for space.
Madrid essentials
Prado: Go opening hour; masterworks are dense—pick a wing, not the entire museum in one visit.
Reina Sofía: Picasso’s Guernica is the headline; allow 2–3 hours.
Retiro Park: Rowboats and Crystal Palace—good recovery afternoon.
Tapas: La Latina and Mercado de San Miguel (touristy but fun for first night).
AVE train tips
Barcelona Sants ↔ Madrid Atocha. Mobile tickets on Renfe; passport may be checked.
Friday afternoon and Sunday evening trains sell out in peak season.
Seven-day add-ons
If you have seven days, add:
- Valencia: City of Arts and Sciences, central market, paella lunch
- Toledo day trip from Madrid (30 minutes by train)—medieval streets and cathedral
Do not add Andalusia (Seville/Granada) without dropping a city—it's a separate trip.
Budget
Roughly €100–170 per person daily mid-range outside festival weekends (San Fermín, major football matches).
Lunch menú del día (set lunch) is the budget hack—often €12–18 with wine.
Pickpockets and scams
Metro L1 Barcelona, Rambles area, and Madrid Puerta del Sol—keep bags in front.
Restaurant “tourist menus” near Plaça Catalunya—check prices before sitting.
Language
Spanish covers both cities; Catalan is official in Barcelona but Spanish works everywhere for travelers. Download our Spanish travel cheat sheet for dining and metro phrases.
Combine with Portugal?
Fourteen days allows Spain + Portugal—see our 14-day Spain & Portugal itinerary or the Portugal week guide if you fly into Lisbon after Madrid.
